La banquise fond bien plus vite que ce que l’on pensait. Une étude rendue publique par l’University College de Londres, ce vendredi, tire la sonnette d’alarme.
Selon cette dernière, la glace dans les principales régions côtières arctiques s’amincit à un rythme de 70 à 100% plus rapide que le consensus établi. Pour en venir à cette conclusion, les chercheurs expliquent avoir utilisé des cartes plus récentes concernant l’épaisseur de la neige au-dessus de la glace. En prenant ainsi en compte l’impact de plusieurs décennies de changement climatique.
En effet, l’épaisseur de la banquise est estimée en mesurant la hauteur de la glace au-dessus de l’eau. Une mesure faussée par la quantité de neige pesant sur la banquise.
« Les calculs précédents sur l’épaisseur de la banquise étaient basés sur une carte de la neige mise à jour pour la dernière fois il y a 20 ans », a expliqué le doctorant Robbie Mallett, qui a dirigé l’étude.
UN NOUVEAU MODÈLE
Pour calculer la hauteur de la glace au-dessus de l’eau et en déduire son épaisseur réelle, les chercheurs ont utilisé un satellite de l’Agence spatiale européenne. Mais aussi, d’un nouveau modèle de calcul d’épaisseur de neige, développé avec l’Université d’État du Colorado (Etats-Unis).
Cette dernière a également tenu à rappeler que l’Arctique se réchauffait trois fois plus vite que la moyenne mondiale.
