L’une des plus hautes autorités catholiques d’Allemagne a posé sa démission, vendredi. Le cardinal de Munich, Reinhard Marx, dénonce « la catastrophe des abus sexuels » au sein de son institution qu’il juge arrivée à « un point mort ».
Dans un courrier adressé au pape le 21 mai et largement cité dans le communiqué, le prélat juge que l’Église catholique est arrivée à « un point mort ». Les récentes discussions ont montré « que certains au sein de l’Église ne veulent pas accepter cette responsabilité et donc la complicité de l’institution et s’opposent donc à tout dialogue de réforme et de renouvellement en lien avec la crise des abus » sexuels, poursuit-il dans cette lettre au vitriol.
L’archevêque de Munich et de Freising avait le mois dernier refusé la plus haute distinction allemande, la Croix fédérale du Mérite, que voulait lui remettre le président allemand Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Sa démission intervient alors que le pape François a ordonné fin mai une enquête sur le traitement de cas d’agressions sexuelles de mineurs au diocèse de Cologne, le plus grand d’Allemagne, secoué par une grave crise depuis des mois.
Le pape a ainsi nommé deux « visiteurs apostoliques », des envoyés pontificaux extraordinaires, chargés d' »appréhender la situation pastorale complexe à l’archevêché et parallèlement d’étudier d’éventuelles fautes » du cardinal Rainer-Maria Woelki et d’autres prélats du diocèse.
Le cardinal Woelki, un conservateur dans les rangs de l’Église, est accusé notamment d’avoir longtemps couvert deux prêtres de la communauté religieuse de Düsseldorf soupçonnés de violences sexuelles.
