Neuf ans après la première version de la Model S, Tesla lance la Model S Plaid dont il a livré les premiers exemplaires à quelques clients.Tesla a décidé de mettre en scène le lancement officiel de la nouvelle Model S Plaid avec un show comme les affectionne son patron Elon Musk. L’événement a été retransmis en direct cette nuit depuis l’usine Tesla de Fremont en Californie (Etats-Unis) pour marquer la livraison des 25 premières Model S Plaid.

La Tesla Model S Plaid succède à la Model S Haute Performance. Elle embarque trois moteurs électriques « Palladium » développant 1020 ch au total qui inaugurent une nouvelle architecture, avec un rotor recouvert de carbone. D’après le constructeur, il est capable de maintenir « la puissance de pic jusqu’à la vitesse de pointe ». La Model S Plaid peut d’atteindre les 322 km/h et revendique le 0 à 100 km/h en 1,99 seconde. 300 km d’autonomie en 15 minutes de charge
Tesla annonce une autonomie maximale de 628 km et de meilleurs performances de la batterie dans les conditions froides grâce à une nouvelle pompe à chaleur. Le nouveau pak Palladium apporte également de meilleures performances pour la recharge, avec 15 minutes pour restaurer 300 km d’autonomie sur les chargeurs rapides Tesla. Elon Musk a fait savoir que ces derniers sont amenés à monter en puissance à l’avenir pour passer de 250kW à 280, 300 et 350 kW.
La Model S Plaid inaugure un nouvel intérieur qui gagne en sobriété et en habitabilité. Il y a évidemment ce fameux volant « Yoke » qui a fait tant parler. Il s’avère qu’il est bien homologué, notamment en Europe. Au cours de la présentation, Elon Musk a vanté les performances du système d’infodivertissement pour jeu vidéo. Il utilise un processeur grapique RDNA 2 d’AMD qui offre des performances équivalentes à celles d’une console de dernière génération type PlayStation 5 ou Xbox Series X. Pour appuyer son propos, le patron de Tesla s’est offert une petite partie de Cyberpunk 2077.
Il y a tout de même une ombre à ce tableau. En effet, à la veille de cette présentation en grandes pompes, le tarif de la Tesla Model S Plaid a augmenté de 10 000 dollars aux Etats-Unis et du même montant en Europe. Annoncée à 119 990 euros en janvier dernier, elle s’affiche désormais à 129 990 euros. Le tarif initial sera maintenu pour tous les acheteurs qui ont déjà passé commande mais les nouveaux clients devront s’acquitter de la rallonge de 10 000 euros. Une inflation que Tesla a justifié par l’augmentation des prix des maières premières. On peut aussi y voir une conséquence de l’abandon de la Model S Plaid+ qui devait chapeauter la gamme à 139 990 euros. Elon Musk a estimé que cette version n’avait pas vraiment de raison d’être au vu des performances de la Plaid.
