Ziona Chana, 76 ans, était à la tête d’une secte religieuse chrétienne polygame de 4 000 membres, et sa famille élargie vivait tous ensemble dans un manoir de 100 pièces et quatre étages dans le village reculé de Baktawng Tlangnuam. La secte a été fondée par son père.

Le polygame a épousé sa première femme, Zathiangi, à l’âge de 17 ans, et aurait épousé 10 de ses autres femmes en l’espace d’un an. Son dernier mariage date de 2004 avec une femme de 25 ans.
En tant qu’épouse de longue date, Zathiangi s’est vu confier la responsabilité d’organiser les tâches ménagères.
La polygamie est illégale en vertu de la loi indienne mais autorisée parmi quelques tribus du nord-est.
Ses enfants et leurs partenaires vivaient dans des pièces différentes de l’immeuble mais partageaient une cuisine commune.
