Depuis novembre 2020, l’armée éthiopienne – soutenue par les troupes des autorités régionales voisines de l’Amhara et l’armée de l’Erythrée – mène une opération militaire dans la région du Tigré lancée par le Premier ministre Abiy Ahmed. L’offensive est dirigée contre le Front de libération du peuple du Tigré (TPLF) écarté du pouvoir central éthiopien à l’arrivée de ce dernier, après avoir dirigé le pays pendant trente ans. Le parti régional, armé, se bat pour le contrôle de la région depuis que le Premier ministre a décidé de prolonger son mandat cet été et celui des parlementaires, en repoussant les élections législatives. Le TPLF avait alors décidé d’organiser ses propres élections dans cet Etat septentrional. Les élections nationales se sont finalement tenues lundi, mais pas dans le Tigré comme dans plusieurs autres circonscriptions, en raison du conflit, qui connaît ces derniers jours un regain d’intensité autour de points stratégiques.
Après cette nouvelle attaque militaire, «il y avait beaucoup de blessés et de morts, on marchait sur eux et dans leur sang», raconte Birhan Gebrehiwet, 20 ans, à l’AFP. Sa maison, installée à proximité de ce marché, a été «totalement détruite» dans l’explosion : «nous avons été enterrés sous les murs et les toits», selon la jeune femme, affirmant être «sûre que ça venait des airs». Un homme soigné à Mekele décrit lui deux «explosions aériennes» qui ont frappé le marché et ses environs. «C’est vers la mi-journée» qu’un ou plusieurs avions ont «bombardé le marché», a relaté Hailu Kebede, responsable d’un parti d’opposition. Celui-ci rapportait les propos de son frère, qui tient un étal au marché, particulièrement fréquenté alors que la saison des cultures approche.
La guerre a déjà fait des milliers de morts et la situation humanitaire est catastrophique, alors que les camions d’aide humanitaires peinent à accéder à la région et que plus de 2 millions de personnes ont été forcées à quitter leurs maisons. Depuis plusieurs mois, les récits d’exactions se succèdent : massacres et viols de masse ont été rapportés. Le conflit ravive aussi les violences ethniques : cinq jours après le déclenchement de l’opération, le 9 novembre, au moins 600 habitants de la petite ville de Mai-Kadra dans l’ouest de la province ont été massacrés à coups de bâtons, de machettes, voire étranglés. Désormais, c’est aussi la famine qui menace des centaines de milliers d’Ethiopiens.
