Aux États-Unis, un neurologue a mis au point une paille spéciale dont les promesses peuvent faire sourire au premier abord. En effet, le scientifique prétend que son invention permet de stopper le hoquet mieux que n’importe quel remède ou astuce que beaucoup appliquent en temps normal.
Une paille ayant fait l’objet d’une étude
Le hoquet est un réflexe ventilatoire intervenant à la suite d’une stimulation de l’œsophage (ou de l’estomac). Cette stimulation amène le tronc cérébral à envoyer des signaux au diaphragme ainsi qu’aux autres muscles respiratoires, les obligeant à se contracter violemment. L’individu est alors sujet à des prises d’air soudaines et à des contractions au niveau des cordes vocales. Ces dernières engendrent le fameux “hic” caractéristique du hoquet.
Pour venir à bout de ce réflexe peu agréable, différentes techniques existent, mais nul ne sait si celles-ci fonctionnent vraiment. Citons par exemple le fait de retenir sa respiration un moment, placer un sac de glaçons sur le diaphragme ou encore laisser fondre une cuillère de sucre sur la langue. D’autres astuces impliquent de boire la tête en bas, avaler sept gorgées d’eau ou sucer un citron.
Une étude parue dans la revue JAMA Network Open le 18 juin 2021 a testé un objet spécial sur 249 volontaires à travers le monde. Il s’agit d’une paille portant le nom de HiccAway mise au point par le neurologue Afi Seifi de l’Université du Texas à Sans Antonio (États-Unis). L’étude vient concrétiser une campagne de financement participatif sur la plateforme Kickstarter ayant atteint ses objectifs en fin d’année 2020.
Des travaux encore insuffisants
Afi Seif désirait opter pour une solution simple stimulant à la fois le nerf vague et le nerf phrénique pour de stopper le hoquet. Concrètement, la paille HiccAway comporte une valve de pression à une de ses extrémités. Elle a donc la particularité d’obliger l’utilisateur à aspirer plus fort que dans le cas d’une paille classique. Néanmoins, Afi Seif affirme déjà que sa paille est efficace, sûre et fiable et incarne le meilleur moyen de se débarrasser du hoquet.
