Le président haïtien Jovenel Moïse a été assassiné dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi par des hommes armés dans sa résidence privée.
Le Premier ministre sortant d’Haïti, Claude Joseph, a annoncé, mercredi 7 juillet, que le président Jovenel Moïse a été assassiné dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi.
« Vers une heure du matin, dans la nuit du mardi 6 au mercredi 7 juillet 2021, un groupe d’individus non identifiés, dont certains parlaient en espagnol, ont attaqué la résidence privée du président de la République et ainsi blessé mortellement le chef de l’État », a annoncé le chef du gouvernement dans un communiqué. « Condamnant cet acte odieux, inhumain et barbare », le Premier ministre appelle « la population au calme » et assure que « la situation sécuritaire du pays » est « sous contrôle ».
L’épouse du président a été blessée dans l’attaque et hospitalisée, a précisé Claude Joseph.
Venu du monde des affaires, Jovenel Moïse, 53 ans, avait été élu président en 2016 et avait pris ses fonctions le 7 février 2017. Haïti, pays des Caraïbes et nation la plus pauvre du continent américain, est gangrené par l’insécurité et notamment les enlèvements contre rançon menés par des gangs jouissant d’une quasi impunité. Une situation qui valait à Jovenel Moïse, accusé d’inaction face à la crise, d’être confronté à une vive défiance d’une bonne partie de la société civile.
Dans ce contexte faisant redouter un basculement vers l’anarchie généralisée, le Conseil de sécurité de l’ONU, les États-Unis et l’Europe appelaient à la tenue d’élections législatives et présidentielle libres et transparentes d’ici la fin 2021.
Jovenel Moïse avait annoncé lundi la nomination d’un nouveau Premier ministre, Ariel Henry, avec justement pour mission la tenue d’élections.
