Les forces régulières d’Amhara – une grande région contiguë au sud du Tigré – combattraient aux côtés des troupes fédérales depuis que le Premier ministre éthiopien, Abiy Ahmed, a lancé l’offensive militaire dans le Tigré en novembre dernier.
Trois autres régions auraient également déployé des forces à la frontière avec le Tigré pour soutenir le gouvernement et ses alliés. Il s’agit de l’Oromia, du Sidama et de la Région des Nations, nationalités et peuples du Sud.
Le système éthiopien
L’Ethiopie a un système fédéral, avec dix Etats régionaux qui sont largement basés sur l’ethnie. Chacun de ces Etats régionaux dispose de ses propres forces spéciales, ainsi que de milices locales.
Reste maintenant à savoir, quel sera l’atout militaire, ce qu’apporteront ces combattants régionaux. Melisew Dejene, universitaire éthiopien, dit ne pas être surpris de voir différentes forces de différentes régions s’unir pour défendre l’intérêt national. Pour lui,
« Le TPLF est devenu une menace pour la nation, suite à la loi et au décret adoptés par la Chambre des représentants, qui qualifient le groupe tigréen de terroriste. » Il pense donc « qu’il n’est pas surprenant de voir différentes forces de différentes régions se rassembler afin de défendre l’intérêt national. Les gens se rassemblent sous un seul drapeau, celui de la défense de leur nation, l’Ethiopie. »
Un pays, une mozaïque d’ethnies
L’Ethiopie avec une population de plus de 110 millions d’habitants, compte plus de 80 groupes ethniques distincts. L’armée fédérale compte quelque 140.000 soldats.
Les troupes de l’Erythrée, voisine de l’Ethiopie, sont également présentes dans le conflit pour soutenir le gouvernement d’Abiy Ahmed.
Le dirigeant érythréen, Isaias Afwerki, est un ennemi juré du TPLF, qui dirigeait l’Ethiopie lorsque les deux pays se livraient une guerre frontalière.
