Un groupe de recherche composé de chercheurs de grandes universités américaines a récemment annoncé un nouveau projet de recherche qui vise à chercher des traces de technologie alien grâce à l’IA.
Dans un premier temps, l’objectif sera d’utiliser tout un réseau de télescope et autres instruments pour trouver des traces de “civilisations technologiques alien”. Les images obtenues seront passées à la moulinette par un système basé sur l’IA, censé reconnaître des traces de technologie non humaine.
Baptisée Projet Galilée, cette initiative provient du professeur d’Harvard Avi Loeb. Un nom déjà connu dans le milieu, et pour cause : il avait suscité une levée de boucliers chez ses collègues astronomes en 2018. Comme beaucoup de ses collègues, il s’était intéressé à Oumuamua; un objet céleste un peu particulier puisqu’il s’agit du premier objet identifié à provenir de l’extérieur de notre système solaire. Une analyse fine de sa trajectoire a montré qu’elle était légèrement différente que dans les prédictions; cela implique la présence d’autres forces en jeu.
Si certains scientifiques y ont simplement vu un phénomène de dégazage, Loeb, lui, a proposé des explications bien plus exotiques; il a notamment suggéré qu’Oumuamua pourrait être un débris de technologie alien, fonctionnant sur le principe d’une voile solaire.
“Ne pas rejeter l’explication extraterrestre”
Particulièrement convaincu, il ne s’est apparemment pas laissé abattre par le mur de scepticisme auquel se sont heurtés ses travaux. Loeb explique que “La science ne devrait pas rejeter une potentielle explication extraterrestre à cause de préférences culturelles ou par stigmatisation sociale, qui ne correspondent pas à la méthode scientifique d’analyse empirique, non biaisée. Nous devons désormais oser “regarder dans de nouveaux télescopes, littéralement comme figurativement”, explique le chercheur.

Et c’est précisément l’objectif du projet Galilée, qui cherchera à braquer ses instruments sur d’autres voyageurs interstellaires. Loeb et son équipe espèrent ainsi trouver les mêmes anomalies de trajectoire repérées chez Oumuamua. Mais qu’ils y parviennent ou non, l’analyse d’objets interstellaires finira certainement par produire quelques résultats intrigants; de quoi alimenter le débat scientifique, et stimuler un petit peu l’imagination du public.
