Le président mauritanien a défendu, une fois de plus, la «position neutre positive» de son pays sur la question du Sahara occidental. Elle permet à la Mauritanie de rapprocher les parties, a expliqué Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani dans une interview publiée dans l’hebdomadaire Jeune Afrique.
Le chef d’Etat a attribué la qualité des liens avec le Maroc et l’Algérie à l’adoption par Nouakchott de cette «neutralité positive». Ould El Ghazouni a ainsi qualifié la relation avec le royaume d’exemplaire, notant qu’il s’est entretenu à plusieurs reprises avec le roi du Maroc, et a échangé avec lui une invitation à des visites mutuelles.
Le président a également défendu ses entretiens réguliers avec des membres de la direction du Polisario, affirmant qu’ils s’inscrivent dans la même ligne politique suivie par la Mauritanie «depuis sa sortie du conflit». Il se réfère ainsi à l’accord d’Alger du 5 août 1979 entre la Mauritanie de Khouna Ould Haidallah, alors chef du Conseil militaire du salut national, et le Polisario, ayant scellé le retrait de Nouakchott des accords de Madrid du 14 novembre 1976. Ould El Ghazouani a dit souhaiter entretenir de bonnes relations avec toutes «les parties» engagées dans le différend du Sahara occidental.
Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas la première fois que le président mauritanien se prononce pour cette approche. En mars 2020, il avait précisé que la position de son gouvernement sur la question du Sahara «n’a pas changé et ne changera pas, car c’est l’un des principes de la politique étrangère du pays, quel que soit le dirigeant ou l’évolution du dossier». Tout en rappelant que Nouakchott reconnaît la «République arabe sahraouie démocratique» depuis 1984, il avait défendu la «neutralité positive» observée par son pays vis-à-vis du différend territorial.
Le 7 novembre 2019, dans une déclaration de presse, son ministre aux Affaires étrangères, Ismail Ould Cheikh, avait réitéré la «neutralité» de son pays sur cette question. «Nous sommes actifs et préoccupés» par ce conflit «mais ne nous soutenons aucune partie».
