Un peu moins de trois mois après l’éruption du volcan Nyiragongo, dans l’est de la RDC, les autorités ont mis jeudi la population en garde contre l’utilisation comme sel de cuisine d’une substance provenant de la coulée de lave, impropre à la consommation.
L’éruption a produit « une substance minérale blanchâtre, qui « est en train d’être utilisée par la population de la chefferie de Bukumu et ses environs (sur le territoire de Nyiragongo) pour des besoins domestiques en lieu et place du sel de cuisine », écrivent dans un communiqué les services du gouverneur de la province du Nord-Kivu.
Or, des analyses scientifiques ont révélé que ce produit contenait « des éléments impropres à la consommation », notamment: « des substances siliceuses insolubles dans l’eau, des traces de métaux lourds, des traces de substances radioactives.
Il ne s’agit donc pas de sel de cuisine communément utilisé, constate le texte. Par conséquent, nous interdisons formellement la consommation de ce produit qui s’avère nocif.
L’éruption du volcan le 22 mai a fait 32 morts et détruit plusieurs centaines de maisons dans la ville de Goma.
