À 38 ans, l’homme a été accusé à tort d’être à l’origine des feux de forêt qui ravagent le pays depuis le 9 août alors qu’il aidait à combattre les flammes. La foule l’a sorti du poste de police où il s’était rendu de lui-même, pour le battre à mort. Face à cette masse incontrôlable, les policiers ont décidé de ne pas tirer, pour éviter d’aggraver la situation.
Le président Abdelmadjid Tebboune a déclaré que les incendies pouvaient être d’origine criminelle. Les autorités ont annoncé l’arrestation d’une vingtaine de suspects.
Dimanche, les pompiers essayaient encore d’éteindre 19 incendies, situés dans dix préfectures algériennes. Au total, les incendies ont causé la mort d’au moins 90 personnes, dont 33 militaires en moins d’une semaine.
