Hissène Habré est décédé mardi à l’âge de 79 ans au Sénégal. Poursuivi et condamné à la prison à perpétuité pour crimes contre l’humanité, crimes de guerre et actes de torture, il était emprisonné à Dakar.
L’administration pénitentiaire sénégalaise a annoncé la mort de Hissène Habré, mardi 24 août. L’ex-président du Tchad était détenu dans le pays, où il a été condamné à la prison à perpétuité pour des crimes commis alors qu’il était à la tête de l’État, entre 1982 et 1990.
Né le 13 août 1942, Hissène Habré est devenu président après le coup d’État de juin 1982, qui a renversé Goukouni Oueddei. Pendant huit ans et demi, il a instauré un régime autoritaire.
Chassé du pouvoir par Idriss Déby, Hissène Habré s’était réfugié au Sénégal. Jugé à partir de 2015 pour crimes contre l’humanité, crimes de guerre et actes de torture, l’ancien président tchadien avait été condamné à la prison à perpétuité le 30 mai 2016. Selon une commission d’enquête, 40 000 personnes seraient mortes sous son régime.
