La gymnaste américaine Simone Biles a été élue Athlète de l’Année 2021 par le magazine hebdomadaire américain Time, jeudi.
Biles, 24 ans, a pourtant connu une année 2021 compliquée sur le plan sportif. Victime de « twisties », un phénomène qui fait perdre aux gymnastes leur sens de l’orientation lorsqu’ils sont en l’air, elle avait abandonné lors de la finale du concours par équipe aux JO de Tokyo. Elle s’était cependant alignée sur la poutre où elle avait décroché la médaille de bronze.
Dans la foulée, la gymnaste n’avait pas hésité à utiliser sa voix pour mettre en lumière les problèmes mentaux chez les sportifs de haut niveau, à l’instar de la joueuse de tennis japonaise Naomi Osaka.
Sur le plan extra-sportif, la quadruple championne olympique s’est également exprimée devant le Sénat américain sur la négligence de la fédération américaine de gymnastique (USAG), le comité olympique et paralympique américain (USOPC) dans l’affaire Larry Nassar. Ex-médecin de l’équipe féminine américaine, Larry Nassar a été condamné à la prison à vie pour des agressions sexuelles commises durant deux décennies sur plus de 250 gymnastes, la plupart mineures.
Simone Biles avait déjà élue Athlète de l’Année en 2016 et 2019 par le groupe Associated Press.
