L’ONG de protection des libertés sur la toile considère que la troisième version du Manifest de Google est toujours un danger pour la vie privée, la sécurité et l’innovation.
En janvier 2019, Google dévoilait son Manifest V3, un ensemble de règles visant à réguler l’utilisation de certaines API par les développeurs. Ces règles concernent en particulier la création d’extensions pour le navigateur Chrome. Presque trois ans plus tard, l’EFF (Electronic Frontier Fondation), association essentielle de défense des libertés numériques, tire un premier bilan peu flatteur de la stratégie de Google.
Pas plus de sécurité, et moins de fonctionnalités
Pour l’EFF, le Manifest V3 ne va pas bloquer les extensions malveillantes, mais va causer du tort à l’innovation, aux performances et aux capacités des extensions.
La réaction des développeurs est très négative, selon l’EFF. Ils reprochent à Google le manque de fonctions, les nombreux bugs, la mauvaise qualité de la documentation, et des changements qui font que leurs extensions ne fonctionnent plus correctement.
Ainsi, les extensions n’ont plus accès aux API du navigateur et doivent utiliser des scripts JavaScript en arrière-plan qui se révèlent limités. En conséquence, les extensions perdent en fonctions et en performances. La réponse de l’éditeur aux développeurs s’est traduite par des modifications… à la marge.
Le Manifest V3 limite également les extensions de type bloqueurs, car ils ne disposent plus de l’API webRequest qui permet de surveiller et de modifier les requêtes HTTP. Ils doivent désormais utiliser l’API declarativeNetRequest, nettement plus contraignante. Cela va constituer un sérieux handicap face à l’évolution rapide des technologies utilisées pour afficher des publicités et utiliser des mouchards publicitaires.
Pour l’EFF, les développeurs devraient pouvoir choisir entre les API webRequest et declarativeNetRequest. L’organisation conteste également les arguments de Google sur les gains de performances que sont censés procurer le Manifest V3.
Il est également reproché à Google de cacher les extensions par défaut dans Chrome, ce qui entraîne de la confusion chez les utilisateurs. Pour accéder aux extensions, il faut cliquer sur l’icône en forme de pièce de puzzle en haut de l’écran. Il est ensuite possible de les afficher en cliquant sur l’icône en forme de punaise.
Google ne donne le ton, il impose…
Avec plus de deux tiers des utilisateurs de navigateurs utilisant Chrome, Google impose sa loi et les développeurs d’extensions sont obligés de suivre. C’est également le cas pour les autres navigateurs, même Mozilla, qui doivent utiliser les nouvelles API de l’éditeur.
L’EFF reproche à Google de tenter d’imposer son Manifest V3 au sein du groupe WebExtensions du W3C, plutôt que de travailler en collaboration avec les autres membres du groupe.
Ainsi, Google viole les principes de conception du groupe WebExtensions, qui concernent la compatibilité, les performances, le souci de l’utilisateur et la maintenabilité.
Les nouvelles extensions, qui utilisent les règles du Manifest V2, ne seront plus acceptées en janvier 2022 et celles existantes cesseront de fonctionner en janvier 2023. L’EFF estime que cela est nettement trop tôt et qu’il faut attendre, tant que tous les problèmes du Manifest V3 ne seront pas réglés.
