Les organisations de défense des droits de l’Homme haussent le ton, deux semaines après l’incendie de la prison de Gitega, qui a coûté officiellement la vie à 38 personnes et fait 69 blessés. Selon la Ligue des droits de l’Homme Iteka, cet incendie a fait plus de 300 morts.

A en croire les associations de défense des droits de l’Homme qui ont mené des enquêtes « au moins 345 personnes ont péri suite à l’incendie qui a ravagé la prison de Gitega », lit-on dans dans le bulletin de la Ligue des droits de l’Homme Iteka, une structure qui regroupe des ONG œuvrant pour le respect des droits de l’Homme. Cette organisation se base notamment sur les témoignages de rescapés qui assurent que plus de 250 détenus de la chambre 4 de cette prison n’ont pas pu s’en sortir car leur porte était restée fermée par les gardiens.

Enterrement inhumain des victimes
Au cours d’un échange avec RFI, Me Jean-Claude Ntiburumunsi, membre de l’Action des chrétiens pour l’abolition de la torture (ACAT-Burundi), s’est interrogé aussi sur le bilan donné par les autorités. « Avant l’incendie, la prison comptait 1539 détenus. Suite à cette tragédie, le ministère de la Solidarité nationale a fait un don de 1200 matelas à la prison et tous les prisonniers ont été servis…Où sont passés les 339 autres ? », a-t-il dit.
Après l’incendie du 7 décembre, le premier Vice-président, Prosper Bazombanza, a assuré que « l’enterrement des disparus » sera pris en charge par le gouvernement. Cependant, deux semaines après, « les familles de ceux qui ont perdu les leurs n’ont toujours pas été informées », alertent ces organisations des droits de l’Homme, qui dénoncent également l’enterrement « inhumain » des victimes de ce drame.
