Les amoureux du rythme musical camerounais appelé « Bikutsi » ont eu du mal à avaler cette pilule, d’un autre genre, « le décès de l’artiste musicien Nkodo Sitony », survenu le 21 décembre 2021, au Centre des Urgences de Yaoundé.
Nkodo Sitony de son vrai nom Nkodo Si Tobie François est né en 1959 ; il est l’ainé d’une grande fratrie (7 enfants). Il est très tôt piqué par le virus de la musique, puisqu’il lui arrivait souvent de faire l’école buissonnière pour aller s’adonner à la musique aux côtés des autres enfants. Il se retrouvait par exemple à aller voir jouer « Les blacks style ». Il était en admiration devant les chanteurs du makossa de l’époque : Nkotti François, Emile Kangue, Guy Lobé, Johnny Black, Dina Bell, Ben Decca etc.
L’icône de la musique camerounaise, Nkodo Sitony a opéré une révolution fondamentale dans le Bikutsi aux côtés de son arrangeur Albert Broeuks. C’est le pionnier de la « Techno-Bikutsi », un Bikusti « informatisé » ; une véritable révolution. C’est aussi lui qui a parfaitement réussi à illustrer comme l’avait pensé Messi Martin que les claviers et balafons pouvaient être remplacés par la guitare solo.
Avec ses compères, le jeune Nkodo se fait fabriquer une guitare artisanale qu’il gratte à longueur de journée. Même les coups de colère de son père (exploitant de cacao et arbitre de football) ne lui feront pas abandonner. Il a trouvé son chemin et est décidé de le suivre jusqu’au bout.
On ne le souligne pas assez mais Nkodo Sitony a été à l’école d’Eboa Lotin auprès de qui il a fait ses premiers pas dans l’univers musical. Manuel N’Guisso a aussi été son compagnon de route. Très bon guitariste, Nkodo Sitony va travailler sa voix puissante et se mettra à l’apprentissage de plusieurs autres instruments (Mvet, basse, balafon, bajo, percussions). En effet, il est séduit par le Makossa mais profite néanmoins de ses séjours au village pour apprendre à jouer aux balafons et aux tambours. Il ne manquait pas de se produire dans les cabarets de Douala au rythme du Makossa.
Après plus de 15 ans passés en France, le chanteur de Bikutsi était de retour au Cameroun, depuis quelques années. Il laisse derrière lui, une immense et riche œuvre. Au moins 25 albums dont « 90° de Bikutsi dans l’ombre » sorti en 1986, et qui lui aura valu, en 1988, les distinctions de Chanson et Artiste de l’Année. Adieu l’artiste !
