Le ministre britannique de la Santé, Sajid Javid, a indiqué samedi que de nouvelles restrictions n’interviendraient qu’« en tout dernier ressort » en Angleterre malgré une déferlante des cas Omicron, estimant qu’il fallait apprendre à « vivre avec » le coronavirus.
Les hospitalisations sont en hausse aussi, même si les autorités soulignent pour l’instant que le variant Omicron semble provoquer des formes moins sévères que le Delta.
« Le nombre (de personnes) dans les unités de soins intensifs est stable et ne suit pas pour l’instant la trajectoire que nous avions vue l’an dernier à cette période durant la vague Alpha », a indiqué Sajid Javid dans une tribune publiée dans le Daily Mail.
Le pays étant dans « une position beaucoup plus forte » grâce à une campagne massive de rappel vaccinal, le gouvernement a décidé de ne pas imposer de nouvelles restrictions durant les fêtes en Angleterre, a-t-il poursuivi, contrairement à l’Écosse, au Pays de Galles et à l’Irlande du Nord.
« Les restrictions à notre liberté ne doivent intervenir qu’en tout dernier ressort », a ajouté M. Javid dans le tabloïd. Soulignant « l’énorme coût sanitaire, social et économique des confinements », il a estimé qu’il fallait se donner les moyens de « vivre avec le virus » grâce à la vaccination, à un arsenal de traitements et au dépistage massif.
Le ministre a toutefois reconnu que le service de santé serait « inévitablement » sous pression ces prochaines semaines à cause d’une « forte hausse » des hospitalisations.
D’autant que, selon le Sunday Times, plus de 110 000 agents de santé, soit environ un dixième des effectifs du service public de santé (NHS), étaient absents vendredi, dont environ 50 000 pour cause de contamination à la COVID-19 ou après avoir été déclarés cas contacts.
