La Russie a déployé des centaines de soldats au niveau de la base militaire de Tombouctou, dans le nord du Mali. Ces nouvelles dispositions ont été prises après le départ de l’armée française, qui a libéré certaines de ses positions dans ce pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest.
La Russie se déploie militairement au Mali, notamment sur la base de Tombouctou, récemment libérée par les forces françaises, conformément à leur plan de restructuration de l’opération Barkhane. C’est ce qu’ont annoncé des responsables militaires maliens à l’agence Reuters.
Ce déploiement, justifient les autorités militaires maliennes, vise à assurer l’entraînement des forces de défense maliennes, dans une base libérée par les troupes françaises, au mois de décembre. Il y a quelques semaines, le gouvernement de Transition avait annoncé l’arrivée au Mali de formateurs russes, mais s’était gardé de donner des précisions sur leur nombre et leur destination.
Si ce déploiement est au centre de toutes les polémiques, avec l’Union Européenne qui a émis des mises en garde contre le Mali, Bamako assure que les soldats russes arrivés au Mali sont des troupes régulières déployées dans le cadre d’un accord de défense bilatéral. Lequel accord a donné lieu à la fourniture par Moscou de matériel militaire aux forces armées maliennes.
Interpellé par Reuters, le porte-parole de l’armée malienne a haussé le ton. « Nous avons acheté à la Russie de nouveaux avions et de l’équipement. Cela coûte beaucoup moins cher de s’entraîner sur place que d’aller là-bas. Où est le mal ? », a-t-il réagi, sans donner de précision sur le nombre de soldats russes détachés à Tombouctou.
