Le Premier ministre britannique Boris Johnson est accusé vendredi de corruption après la divulgation la veille de messages échangés sur WhatsApp entre lui et le riche mécène du parti David Brownlow.
Dans ces échanges datant de novembre 2020, Boris Johnson demande le déblocage de moyens financiers pour la luxueuse rénovation de sa résidence de fonction au 10 Downing Street à Londres. En retour, il semble promettre de promouvoir un projet de l’entrepreneur, un grand événement baptisé « Great Exhibition 2.0 ». Quelques semaines plus tard, celui qui était alors ministre de la Culture, Oliver Dowden, rencontrait M. Brownlow pour discuter du projet.
M. Johnson aurait fait rénover sa résidence officielle pour un montant de 112.000 livres sterling (environ 134.000 euros) alors que les dirigeants britanniques n’ont droit qu’à un maximum de 30.000 livres (36.000 euros) par an. Le Premier ministre britannique aurait demandé à M. Brownlow d’ériger une fondation qui financerait les travaux mais ce plan a échoué.
La question de savoir qui a payé pour cette rénovation a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs enquêtes. La commission électorale britannique a condamné le Parti conservateur à une amende de 20.000 livres pour le financement irrégulier du parti par M. Brownlow. Boris Johnson a été réprimandé pour ne pas avoir rendu les messages WhatsApp disponibles, qui ont été révélés dans le cadre d’une enquête de la commission électorale. Leur contenu était plus explosif qu’attendu.
