La très lourde défaite des Mourabitounes face à la Tunisie (0-4) scelle assurément leur élimination dès la phase de groupes de la CAN 2021.
Pour sa deuxième participation consécutive, la Mauritanie voit son rêve se transformer en cauchemar. Battus par la Gambie lors de leur premier match dans le Groupe F (0-1), les Mourabitounes n’ont rien pu faire face à la Tunisie ce dimanche après, s’inclinant nettement sur un cinglant revers de 4 buts à 0.
Tout avait très mal démarré pour la Mauritanie. La formation de Didier Gomes encaissait deux buts en l’espace d’une dizaine de minutes après les réalisations de Mathlouthi (4e) et Wahbi Khazri (9e). La note pouvait être beaucoup plus salée pour la Mauritanie sans un bon gardien dans les buts, Babacar Diop, qui en plus d’avoir réalisé plusieurs arrêts, a stoppé un penalty de Msakni en fin de match.
Du coup, Pape Ibnou Ba et ses coéquipiers ne peuvent plus rêver d’une qualification en huitièmes de finale puisque cette défaite les écarte d’une troisième place. La Tunisie quant à elle se relance après son revers face au Mali lors de la journée inaugurale.
Les Aigles de Carthage sont troisièmes de la poule avec trois points derrière la Gambie et le Mali, qui comptent le même nombre de points. Un peu plus tôt dans l’après-midi, Gambiens et Maliens se sont quittés en bons voisins en se partageant les points (1-1).
