La banque britannique Barclays a annoncé jeudi la nomination de l’ancien ministre de l’Economie et figure de la droite François Baroin en tant que président de sa filiale française.
« L’expérience et la stature de François Baroin font de lui un choix idéal pour devenir Chairman (président, ndlr) pour la France », explique Francesco Ceccato, PDG de Barclays Europe, cité dans un communiqué.
« En élargissant son rôle, il sera en mesure de contribuer encore plus fortement à l’expansion de nos activités en France », reprend-il.
M. Baroin aura notamment pour mission de participer au développement des relations avec les grands clients de la banque et à la promotion de toutes les activités et solutions proposées par Barclays en France, est-il précisé.
Le maire de Troyes (Aube), 56 ans, exerçait depuis 2018 un rôle de conseiller au sein de la banque sur les métiers de banque d’affaires.
Ancien parlementaire, François Baroin a été plusieurs fois ministre de gouvernements de droite entre 2005 et 2012, notamment de l’Intérieur, du Budget et de l’Economie et des finances. Il dirigeait jusqu’en 2021 la puissante Association des maires de France (AMF).
La banque britannique emploie environ 300 personnes en France, avec une activité de banque d’affaires mais aussi d’investissement, de financement et de banque privée.
Barclays a par le passé exercé le métier de banque de détail en France, avant d’annoncer son retrait en 2014. Un plan social et la cession des agences en 2017 au fonds d’investissements AnaCap Financial Partners avait entraîné la création de Milleis Banque, lancée en 2018.
D’autres anciens ministres ont fait le choix du privé: l’ancienne collègue de M. Baroin Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet est passée par Capgemini tandis que l’ancien Premier ministre François Fillon avait rejoint la société de gestion d’actifs et d’investissement Tikehau Capital.
Fleur Pellerin, ancienne ministre de la Culture de François Hollande, a de son côté fondé en 2016 un fonds d’investissement, Korelya Capital.
