La Russie a dépassé samedi pour la première fois la barre symbolique des 100.000 infections quotidiennes au Covid-19, un record qui illustre la force de la nouvelle vague due au variant Omicron, très contagieux.
Selon les chiffres du gouvernement, 113.122 nouveaux cas ont été enregistrés ces dernières 24 heures, et 668 personnes sont mortes. La capitale, Moscou, reste le principal foyer de l’épidémie en Russie avec 26.488 nouvelles infections et 76 nouveaux décès.
Il s’agit d’un record de nouvelles infections pour le neuvième jour consécutif dans le pays le plus endeuillé d’Europe par le coronavirus.
La pandémie a sérieusement aggravé la crise démographique que connaît depuis trente ans la Russie, qui a perdu plus d’un million d’habitants au cours de l’année 2020.
Si les autorités recensent 330.111 morts du Covid-19 depuis le début de la pandémie, l’agence statistiques Rosstat, qui a une définition plus large, en a dénombré plus de 660.000, soit presque le double du bilan officiel.
Ce bilan s’explique par une campagne de vaccination très poussive, la quasi-absence de mesures de confinement depuis le printemps 2020 et un non-respect généralisé de mesures sanitaires comme le port du masque dans les transports publics.
Alors même que ce pays dispose de plusieurs vaccins de sa propre conception, dont le Spoutnik V, moins de la moitié des 145 millions de Russes sont complètement immunisés à ce jour, selon le site internet spécialisé Gogov.

Après un confinement strict au printemps 2020, les autorités russes ont refusé de remettre en place de telles restrictions, malgré de nouvelles vagues épidémiques, afin de limiter les pertes économiques.
