Yannick Noah vit aujourd’hui à Yaoundé, au Cameroun, dans le quartier d’Etoudi. Un retour aux sources pour l’ancien vainqueur de Roland-Garros (1983). Une remise en question initiée après le décès de son père en janvier 2017. Un changement de vie radical: “C’est là que j’ai grandi”, confie-t-il au média français. “Je suis le patriarche de ce qui était un village et maintenant, c’est l’un des quartiers de Yaoundé”, la capitale du pays. Cette nouvelle “responsabilité”, “Tonton Yannick” s’y attelle avec passion: “Tu t’occupes des petits, tu t’occupes des anciens. Et puis de temps en temps, pour les plus jeunes, c’est une bière”, raconte-t-il devant l’école que sa mère, ancienne professeure de français, a fondé à l’époque. Sa chambre d’enfant fait d’ailleurs désormais office de classe.
“Je suis parti 48 ans”
“Je suis parti d’ici j’avais 12 ans. Donc j’étais un petit môme. Je jouais au tennis, j’allais suivre mon destin. Et, en fait, je suis parti 48 ans. Je revenais de temps en temps et là, tout d’un coup, j’ai eu comme un appel”, une envie de “protéger la terre qui est ma terre, qui est la terre de mes ancêtres (…) Je le fais pour mes enfants, pour mes petits-enfants. Au moins, je leur laisserai ça. Ce ne sera pas juste un trophée dans une vitrine ou des souvenirs”. C’était le “rêve fou” de son père que Yannick revienne s’installer durablement à Yaoundé: “Je n’aurais pas pu venir il y a trois ans, ce n’était pas le moment… mais là, tout d’un coup, c’était le moment”, avoue-t-il. Il ne cache pas qu’il a fallu évidemment se réadapter à son nouveau lieu de vie: “Il a fallu que je me remette à apprendre, à comprendre au minimum le dialecte local. C’est une vraie responsabilité mais je suis un bagarreur”, conclut-il.
