Le meurtre d’une rare brutalité d’un jeune homme originaire de la République Démocratique du Congo battu à mort sur une plage à Rio de Janeiro a suscité une vague d’indignation au Brésil, où des célébrités lui ont rendu hommage.
Moïse Kabagambe, 24 ans, a été tué le 24 janvier près d’un kiosque de la plage de Barra da Tijuca où il travaillait. Selon des témoignages de sa famille, il aurait été roué de coups après avoir réclamé le versement de deux journées de salaires impayés. «Il voulait son argent avant de rentrer chez lui et le gérant du kiosque n’a pas voulu le payer. Ils se sont disputés, le gérant a pris un bâton pour le frapper et Moïse s’est saisi d’une chaise pour se défendre», a raconté à l’AFP son frère Sammy Kabagambe, 28 ans, qui vit également à Rio.
Selon lui, le gérant a ensuite rameuté d’autres individus qui l’ont frappé durant de nombreuses minutes avec des bâtons et une batte de baseball. Pour neutraliser Moïse, ses agresseurs ont également attaché ses poignets et ses chevilles à l’aide d’une corde. Des images d’une violence insoutenable filmées par une caméra de surveillance diffusées mardi par le journal O Globo montrent le jeune homme à terre, pendant qu’au moins trois hommes s’acharnent sur lui. La fin de la vidéo montre un des agresseurs tentant de le réanimer, en vain, après l’avoir tabassé.
Sur les réseaux sociaux, de nombreuses personnalités ont condamné ce crime. «J’ai pleuré aujourd’hui en lisant le récit du meurtre de Moïse Mujenyi Kabagambe (…) Le fait que le kiosque se nomme Tropicalia ne fait qu’accentuer ma douleur», a tweeté le chanteur Caetano Veloso, un des chantres du tropicalisme, mouvement culturel qui a révolutionné la musique brésilienne dans les années 60. «Ce n’est pas le Rio que j’ai appris à aimer et qui m’a reçu à bras ouverts», a déploré pour sa part Gabigol, attaquant de Flamengo, club de football le plus populaire de la ville. Selon les médias locaux, un individu s’est présenté mardi dans un commissariat pour avouer avoir participé au meurtre. «Une expertise a été menée sur place et les images des caméras de sécurité seront analysées», a précisé la police de Rio dans un courriel envoyé à l’AFP.
Moïse Kabagambe est arrivé au Brésil avec une partie de sa famille en 2011, fuyant le conflit armé qui sévit depuis des décennies en République Démocratique du Congo. «Nous avons fui la RDC pour ne pas qu’on nous tue, mais on a tué mon fils ici, comme on tue les gens dans mon pays, (…) comme un animal», a déclaré pour sa part sa mère, dans un témoignage recueilli par O Globo.
