Le Conseil de l’Union Européenne a annoncé la levée des sanctions économiques prises contre le Burundi, depuis mars 2016. Cette mesure intervient une année et demie après l’accession d’Evariste Ndayishimiye à la magistrature suprême.
L’ouverture diplomatique du nouveau régime burundais ne cesse de produire des résultats. Après les encouragements de l’ONU, des USA et l’UA, c’est au tour de l’Union Européenne de saluer les progrès accomplis par Gitega. « Le Conseil a décidé aujourd’hui d’abroger la décision qu’il avait prise en 2016, par laquelle il imposait au Burundi des mesures telles que la suspension du soutien financier et du versement de fonds au bénéfice direct de l’administration ou des institutions burundaises », a déclaré le Conseil de l’UE dans un communiqué.
La mesure levant les sanctions économiques contre le Burundi est « l’aboutissement du processus politique pacifique entamé lors des élections générales de mai 2020, qui apporte une lueur d’espoir à la population du Burundi », lit-on dans le document. L’UE a, à cette occasion, félicité le nouveau régime pour ses actions menées « en ce qui concerne les droits de l’Homme, la bonne gouvernance et l’Etat de droit, ainsi que des engagements pris dans sa feuille de route en vue de nouvelles améliorations dans ces domaines ».
La satisfaction de part et d’autre
En réaction, le Président burundais Evariste Ndayishimiye a salué cette décision qu’il qualifie de « sage » et réitère l’engagement du Burundi « à coopérer avec tous les partenaires », a-t-il écrit sur twitter. La levée des sanctions économiques contre le Burundi marque un nouveau tournant dans les relations entre l’UE et Gitega. « Saluons tous ceux qui sont engagés dans le cheminement de concert vers la normalisation et le réchauffement », a déclaré, de son coté, Claude Bochu, Ambassadeur de l’UE au Burundi.
Pour rappel, en 2016 l’UE, principal bailleur de fonds du Burundi avec une aide évaluée à 430 millions d’euros pour la période 2015-2020, a suspendu les appuis financiers directs fournis à l’administration burundaise, y compris les appuis budgétaires, en raison du troisième mandat de feu Pierre Nkurunziza.
