L’ancien ministre juge sévèrement la campagne de Valérie Pécresse, qu’il accuse de « n’être obnubilée que par l’islamisme radical, même si c’est fondamental ». « Il y a une forme de course-poursuite entre les candidats sur les sujets sécuritaires, qui sont importants, mais ne peuvent à eux seuls constituer un projet global. J’ai trouvé que ma formation politique, dont je suis membre depuis 1981, a dérivé », juge-t-il.

Le président des Républicains, Christian Jacob, a rapidement réagi, affirmant à l’AFP qu’Éric Woerth ne pouvait « en aucun cas » rester membre du parti, et lui a demandé de quitter la présidence de la Commission des finances de l’Assemblée nationale.
« Il y a un minimum de dignité à avoir envers ceux qui ont toujours été à ses côtés », a affirmé Christian Jacob, qui a fait part de « beaucoup de déception et de regret ». Mais « il faut relativiser : Éric Woerth est un parlementaire en fin de carrière » et « ses affaires judiciaires ont sans doute pesé » dans sa décision, a-t-il ajouté.
