L’école est en panne au Zimbabwe. C’est la conclusion qui se dégage après le constat des classes vides dans les écoles de la capitale, Harare, ce lundi.
Le constat, ce lundi 14 février, à Harare, au Zimbabwe, ce sont des classes vides d’enseignants et d’élèves. Là où les élèves sont présents, c’est surtout pour s’amuser dans la cour de récréation. Et pour cause ! Le gouvernement a pris la décision, jeudi, de suspendre 135 000 enseignants qui s’étaient absentés à la reprise des classes, la semaine dernière, pour protester contre les salaires dérisoires qu’ils perçoivent. Le nombre d’enseignants ainsi suspendus correspond à 90% de l’effectif total du personnel enseignant des établissements publics estimé à quelque 150 000 personnes, selon Takavafira Zhou, président du syndicat progressiste des enseignants.
Les professionnels de l’éducation reprochent au régime du Président Emmerson Mnangagwa la dégradation de leur condition par rapport à l’époque de Robert Mugabe dont ils sont visiblement déjà nostalgiques. « Nous voulons des salaires équivalents à ceux du temps de Mugabe, soit 540 dollars », a laissé entendre Takavafira Zhou.
Pour rappel, l’éducation a été l’une des priorités du Président Robert Mugabe qui a réussi à faire du Zimbabwe l’un des pays ayant le taux d’alphabétisation le plus élevé sur tout le continent, au début du siècle. Selon les estimations de l’UNESCO, 89% des adultes zimbabwéens étaient alphabétisés en 2014.
Cette crise risque donc de porter un coup dur au système éducatif zimbabwéen déjà mis à mal par plusieurs années de crise économique profonde. Depuis plus d’une décennie, le Zimbabwe s’est enfoncé dans une crise économique sans fin, aggravée par les sanctions internationales prises contre le pays après la réforme agraire mise en œuvre par Robert Mugabe qui a dépossédé la minorité blanche des terres qu’elle détenait pour les redistribuer aux Noirs.
