« Le nombre de personnes qui viennent chez nous est de loin plus élevé qu’avant. Le nombre a été multiplié par quatre parce que nous nous occupons chaque jour de personnes d’origines sociales diverses qui viennent nous demander des remèdes. Nous pouvons dire que le nombre de personnes a augmenté et que les gens apprécient maintenant plus qu’avant les remèdes à base de plantes », explique Abubakar Khalid, vendeur.
Les herboristes affirment que c’est aussi à cause un système de santé défaillant, que leurs ventes ont explosé. Et, pour ne rien arranger, un énorme volume de faux médicaments se retrouve sur le territoire.
« La raison pour laquelle les gens ont recours aux remèdes à base de plantes est la pression économique qui touche tout le monde, les médicaments coûtent cher et parfois les gens ne sont pas soulagés après avoir acheté des médicaments et doivent retourner à l’hôpital. C’est pourquoi vous trouverez des remèdes à base de plantes en vente à chaque coin de rue », explique Nasir Abdullahi, habitant de Kano.
Sauf que cette alternative, efficace pour beaucoup, peut aussi présenter des risques, selon les médecins, qui alertent sur l’existence de faux remèdes et de nombreux herboristes charlatans. Au Nigeria, comme dans d’autres pays du continent, la phytothérapie est un art conservé au sein de certaines familles et qui se transmet de génération en génération.
