Il y a un an, des centaines d’éléphants avaient été retrouvés morts au Botswana. Soulevant les questions des experts. Ils avaient finalement conclu à la responsabilité d’une cyanobactérie qui se serait développée dans l’eau à la faveur d’un réchauffement climatique faisant monter les températures et descendre les sources d’eau.
L’histoire semble vouloir se répéter cette année : 39 morts d’éléphants ont déjà été déclarés sur les trois premiers mois de 2021 dans la réserve de Moreni, à une centaine de kilomètres de la région touchée entre mai et juin 2020. Dans des circonstances étranges, à en croire des annonces officielles discordantes. Le ministre de l’Environnement, de la Conservation des ressources naturelles et du Tourisme affirmant, fin mars, que les mêmes cyanobactéries sont à blâmer. Le Département de la faune et des parcs nationaux du Botswana soutenant de son côté, quelques jours plus tôt, qu’une infection bactérienne est exclue. Mais que des analyses sont toujours en cours.
Plusieurs pistes, mais pas encore de certitudes
Ce qui continue d’étonner aussi, c’est la spécificité de l’infection qui semble ne toucher que les éléphants. Des animaux déjà mis en danger par le braconnage et par l’utilisation des terres par les Hommes qui, non seulement diminuent les espaces libres pour les éléphants, mais aussi les fractionnent.
Notez qu’au Zimbabwe, un pays voisin du Botswana, 37 éléphants ont également été retrouvés morts en 2020 dans des circonstances troubles. Les chercheurs ont d’abord cru à une septicémie hémorragique causée par la bactérie Pasteurella multocida. Les analyses ont montré que c’était plutôt la bactérie appelée Bisgaard Taxon 45 qui était en cause. Peut-être les experts parviendront-ils dans les semaines à venir à résoudre l’énigme des éléphants morts au Botswana…
