Le président américain Joe Biden a estimé jeudi que le cessez-le-feu à Gaza, approuvé entre Israël et le Hamas ce jeudi, représentait « une vraie opportunité » d’avancer vers la paix, tout en exprimant sa « sincère reconnaissance » à l’Égypte pour son rôle dans les négociations.
« Je suis convaincu que les Palestiniens et les Israéliens méritent tout autant de vivre en sécurité et de jouir d’un même niveau de liberté, de prospérité et de démocratie », a déclaré Joe Biden depuis la Maison Blanche. « Mon administration poursuivra notre diplomatie discrète et infatigable pour aller vers cet objectif. Je suis convaincu que nous avons une vraie opportunité d’avancer et je m’engage à travailler en cette direction ».
Onze jours de confrontation meurtrière
Après d’intenses tractations diplomatiques, Israël et le Hamas, mouvement islamiste au pouvoir dans la bande de Gaza, ont approuvé jeudi soir un accord de cessez-le-feu sous médiation égyptienne visant à mettre fin à leur confrontation la plus meurtrière depuis des années.
Les rumeurs de trêve ont fusé toute la journée pour aboutir finalement à un accord de cessation des hostilités devant entrer en vigueur dès 2 heures locales vendredi (23 heures GMT jeudi), après une dizaine de jours d’affrontements ayant fait au moins 232 morts côté palestinien et 12 morts en Israël.
Cet accord a été favorisé par l’Egypte, puissance régionale entretenant à la fois des relations avec Israël et le Hamas, mouvement considéré comme « terroriste » par l’Etat hébreu, l’Union européenne et les Etats-Unis.
