Magawa, un rat africain géant, va prendre une retraite bien méritée après avoir contribué à sauver des vies en détectant des mines au Cambodge. Il a également été décoré pour sa bravoure, comme vous pouvez le voir dans la vidéo en tête d’article.
Pendant ses cinq ans de carrière, Magawa a aidé au nettoyage de quelque 225.000 m2 de terres, l’équivalent de 42 terrains de football, selon l’ONG qui l’a formé pendant un an en Tanzanie, son pays d’origine. Au total, le gros rongeur a détecté 71 mines et 38 munitions non explosées.
Le premier rat
En septembre dernier, Magawa s’est vu décerner une médaille d’or par l’association britannique de protection des animaux PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals), qui récompense chaque année un animal pour sa bravoure. Magawa a été le premier rat à recevoir cette récompense, considérée comme l’équivalent pour les animaux de la Croix de Georges (George Cross), plus grand honneur décerné à des civils.
Selon PDSA, entre 4 et 6 millions de mines ont été posées au Cambodge de 1975 à 1998, faisant plus de 64.000 victimes.
Active en Asie et en Afrique, l’ONG belge Apopo, qui forme également des rats à repérer la tuberculose, s’en remet à ces animaux présentant un talent particulier pour les tâches répétitives lorsqu’on les récompense avec leurs mets favoris et dont la petite taille les protège des explosions.
Un terrain de tennis en 30 minutes
Pour la détection du TNT contenu par les explosifs, elle leur apprend à gratter sur la terre afin de signaler sa présence aux humains qui travaillent avec eux.
Cette technique, qui ne se base pas sur la présence de ferraille, permet de travailler bien plus vite qu’avec un détecteur de métaux. Du haut de ses 70 cm, Magawa peut ainsi passer au peigne fin l’équivalent d’un terrain de tennis en 30 minutes, tâche qui prendrait jusqu’à quatre jours à un humain équipé d’un détecteur de métaux.
Selon l’ONG, un groupe de 20 nouveaux rats spécialement entraînés tout juste arrivés au Cambodge ont reçu l’accord des autorités pour entamer leur travail de détection des mines.
Mais il leur faudra du temps avant d’égaler Magawa, “un rat très exceptionnel”, assure Michael Heiman. “Il est évident qu’il va nous manquer pendant les opérations”.
