L’ancien président mauritanien Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz a été arrêté ce mardi 22 juin aux environs de 20H TU.
Il a été placé en détention par un juge du pôle de lutte anticorruption du parquet de Nouakchott-Ouest, confirme l’un de ses avocats contactés par notre correspondant à Nouakchott.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, qui a dirigé la Mauritanie entre 2008 et 2019, a été inculpé le 12 mars 2021 pour corruption, détournement de biens publics et blanchiment d’argent. Des faits qu’il a toujours niés.
L’ancien président mauritanien est l’un des meneurs du coup d’État d’août 2005 qui dépose le président Maaouiya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, puis conduit le coup d’août 2008 qui renverse le président Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi et le Premier ministre Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef, à l’issue d’une crise politique.
Il est alors désigné par la junte président du Haut Conseil d’État, l’organe de la transition, avant d’être élu président de la Mauritanie en 2009, et réélu en 2014. Il annonce en 2018 son intention de quitter le pouvoir à l’expiration de son second et dernier mandat, conformément aux dispositions de l’article 28 de la Constitution mauritanienne de 1991.
