Jacob Zuma avait jusqu’à mercredi minuit pour se constituer prisonnier ou pour être emmené de force par la police. Direction, la prison d’Escourt, 200 km plus loin où le convoi de Jacob Zuma s’est immobilisé aux alentours de 1h 30. C’est dans ce pénitencier d’une capacité d’accueil dépassant 500 détenus et créé en 2009 que « M. Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma a été admis pour commencer à purger sa peine », précise un communiqué de l’administration pénitentiaire. L’ancien chef d’État a donc passé sa première nuit en prison, non pas en tant que combattant de la liberté cette fois, mais pour avoir nargué la justice de son pays.
L’homme s’est rendu sans qu’on assiste à une résistance de ses militants, contrairement aux discours belliqueux que tenaient certains de ses soutiens.
Une volte-face de la police
Alors que les avocats de Jacob Zuma avaient introduit, vendredi dernier, à la Cour constitutionnelle, un recours pour demander l’annulation ou tout au moins la réduction de la peine de 15 mois de prison prononcée contre leur client, la police a déclaré, avant-hier, mardi, qu’elle n’arrêterait pas l’ancien Président jusqu’à l’examen du recours prévu pour le lundi 12 juillet. Ce qui revenait à dire que jusqu’à ce que la Cour se prononce sur son recours, l’ancien dirigeant sud-africain pouvait continuer à jouir de sa liberté.
Cette annonce faite par le ministre de la Police, Bekhi Cele, n’avait pas manqué de susciter des réactions dans le pays, certains se demandaient si ce dernier était habilité à prendre une pareille décision. Moins de 24 heures plus tard, Bekhi Cele revenait sur sa position, affirmant n’être « pas prêt à affronter des accusations d’outrage à la justice » pour n’avoir pas exécuté l’ordre.
