Dans les années 1970, un rapport publié par des chercheurs du Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT, États-Unis) avait fait grand bruit. Il annonçait l’effondrement possible de notre civilisation avant la fin du XXIe siècle. Des conclusions tristement en phase avec les données actuelles, conclut aujourd’hui une nouvelle étude.
Au tout début des années 1970, des chercheurs du MIT (Massachusetts institute of technology) nous avaient avertis : si nous continuions sur le chemin d’une croissance économique ne tenant pas compte des coûts environnementaux et sociaux, notre civilisation industrielle s’effondrerait dans le courant du XXIe siècle. Dans un scénario de Business as usual (BAU2), la croissance économique atteindrait son apogée dès 2040. Avant de connaître un net ralentissement avec pour effet une diminution nette de la population mondiale, de la disponibilité alimentaire et des ressources naturelles. Marquant, non pas la fin de l’humanité, mais un tournant au cours duquel il faut s’attendre à ce que notre niveau de vie baisse pendant des décennies.
L’étude — vous l’imaginez si vous ne vous en souvenez pas — avait fait polémique. Et aujourd’hui, elle revient sur le devant de la scène. Gaya Herrington, chercheur en développement durable, a en effet décidé de rouvrir le dossier dans le cadre de sa thèse à l’université de Harvard (États-Unis). Pour constater que les données disponibles sur notre monde actuel — développement économique, exploitation des ressources, etc. — s’accordent extrêmement bien avec deux scénarios envisagés à l’époque par les chercheurs du MIT. Le scénario BAU et un autre, appelé Comprehensive technology (CT). Dans ce dernier, les progrès technologiques aident à limiter la pollution et à augmenter les productions alimentaires, même lorsque les ressources s’épuisent.
Le scénario CT apparaît moins violent pour les populations et leur bien-être et semble ne pas vouloir conduire à un réel effondrement de notre civilisation. Il mène toutefois inexorablement, comme le scénario BAU, à un arrêt de la croissance mondiale d’ici une dizaine d’années.
Rien n’est encore perdu… mais le temps presse
Il y a cependant une bonne nouvelle. C’est qu’il n’est pas trop tard pour rattraper le scénario le plus optimiste envisagé il y a près de 50 ans par les chercheurs du MIT. Celui qu’ils ont appelé Stabilized world (SW). Dans ce scénario, notre civilisation prend un tour durable. Elle connaît certes une baisse de sa croissance économique, mais une baisse tout à fait acceptable. Car dans ce scénario, les priorités sociétales changent.
Dans le scénario SW, la croissance industrielle et la population mondiale commencent à se stabiliser peu de temps après ce changement de valeurs. La disponibilité alimentaire, quant à elle, continue d’augmenter pour répondre aux besoins de la population mondiale. La pollution diminue jusqu’à pratiquement disparaître. L’épuisement des ressources naturelles commence également à se stabiliser. L’effondrement de notre civilisation est évité.
Ce scénario aujourd’hui semble un peu utopique alors même que l’Agence internationale de l’énergie (AIE) annonce que la pandémie de Covid-19 a marqué un temps d’arrêt dans les investissements pour les énergies propres. Et que nos émissions de CO2 devraient atteindre un nouveau record en 2023. Mais la crise sanitaire mondiale qui nous vivons nous a aussi montré à quel point l’humanité était capable de se mobiliser rapidement et de manière constructive pour faire face à des défis mondiaux. Selon les travaux de Gaya Herrington, il nous resterait 10 ans pour changer notre façon d’envisager nos sociétés et pour sauver notre civilisation de l’effondrement.
Tous les voyants sont au rouge ! Si nous ne faisons rien pour diminuer le réchauffement climatique et réduire notre impact sur la biodiversité, notre monde va basculer dans une crise planétaire sans précédent qui anéantirait la civilisation humaine, alertent les auteurs d’un rapport qui vient de sortir sur ce qui nous attend d’ici 2050. La biosphère est en danger.
