Dans les dernières semaines, les activités du télescope Hubble ont été interrompues en raison d’un problème technique. Heureusement, le célèbre instrument est maintenant prêt à reprendre du service.
Le 13 juin dernier, l’ordinateur qui contrôle les instruments de Hubble et qui évalue leur état les a mis en mode « sûr » après avoir reçu un signal d’erreur. Les activités d’observation du télescope ont alors été suspendues.
Il aura fallu près d’un mois à l’équipe de la NASA pour déterminer la cause de l’erreur. Il s’agirait d’un problème au niveau de l’unité de contrôle d’alimentation électrique. Il était toutefois impossible de réinitialiser cette unité à partir de la Terre.
Le personnel de la NASA a donc eu recours à un système de secours présent sur le télescope et qui contient une unité de contrôle d’alimentation de rechange. Une stratégie similaire avait été utilisée avec succès en 2008 lorsqu’une autre partie du télescope avait connu un problème de fonctionnement.
Le 19 juillet, Hubble a transmis ses premières images depuis son retour en fonction. Une nouvelle qui a été accueillie avec soulagement par les astronomes, selon Science.
