L’ancien Président sud-africain Jacob Zuma et la société française d’armement Thales font face à des accusations de corruption, de fraude, de racket et de blanchiment d’argent liées à l’accord sur les armes. Zuma de soumettre un rapport médical, au plus tard le 20 août, afin de clarifier son état de santé et de savoir s’il serait en mesure de se présenter au procès.
Le juge Piet Koen a également ordonné que l’Etat sud-africain puisse désigner un médecin de son choix pour examiner M. Zuma. L’avocat Wim Trengove, qui représente le ministère public, a déclaré qu’il ignorait complètement l’état de santé de l’ancien Président Jacob Zuma, motif pour justifier un nouveau report de l’affaire contre lui et Thales. « La lettre du médecin n’identifie pas du tout la pathologie dont il souffre, et dit de manière assez perplexe, qu’il s’agissait d’un état qui a nécessité des procédures d’urgence étendues, qui ont été retardées de 18 mois », a déclaré Trengove.
Cependant, l’avocat de Jacob Zuma, Dali Mpofu, a défendu le contenu de la lettre, affirmant qu’il n’aurait pas été acceptable que le médecin divulgue des informations confidentielles sur l’état de santé de son client. Pendant ce temps, la Haute Cour de Pietermaritzburg a ordonné qu’elle doive recevoir le rapport médical de Zuma d’ici vendredi, la semaine prochaine, pour s’assurer de son aptitude à subir son procès.
L’État sud-africain devrait également nommer un médecin qui procédera à une évaluation indépendante de la santé de Jacob Zuma et donnera des conclusions.
