Dans le delta de Saloum, au Sénégal, la pêche s’annonce bonne. Dans les mangroves, les pêcheuses de fruits de mer embarquent chaque jour sur des bateaux, afin d’aller récupérer des huîtres et coques. Dix ans auparavant, le tableau était très différent, une partie des mangroves avaient disparu à cause de la sécheresse, créant des risques d’inondations pour les habitations.
« Le reboisement est très important », commente Mariane Ndong, ostréicultrice et pêcheuse de coques. « Si aujourd’hui la mer n’a pas inondé notre village, c’est grâce au reboisement. Si rien n’avait été fait, la mer aurait détruit le village. Quand on reboise, on voit la boue dans la mangrove. La boue réduit la force de la mer, qui ne peut plus attaquer le village. »
Financé par le Fond international pour le développement agricole (FIDA) des Nations Unies, le projet a permis de restaurer des milliers d’hectares de mangroves.
« Le Sénégal et l’Afrique ont vu une dénudation de leurs mangroves au cours des 25 dernières années, de l’ordre d’environ 40 % », expose Jyotsna Puri, la directrice du climat du Fonds international pour le développement agricole (FIDA) des Nations unies.
« Le Sénégal a été particulièrement touché par cette érosion, ce qui signifie que les personnes vivant près des côtes et dans les zones côtières ont perdu leurs moyens de subsistance et ne peuvent donc plus pêcher, ni récolter de poissons ou fruits de mer, ni s’intégrer aux marchés. Cela les rend donc encore plus vulnérables. »
« Les mangroves sont définitivement une solution, presque une solution en or pour les zones côtières du monde entier. Qu’il s’agisse de la Grèce, de l’Italie, du Bangladesh ou des îles du Pacifique, tous les pays dont les zones côtières vont souffrir de l’élévation du niveau de la mer et d’une vulnérabilité accrue en raison du changement climatique, de l’augmentation des tempêtes, de la hausse des marées, etc. Donc elles sont vraiment une bonne solution naturelle. »
Au total, près de 50 000 familles de la région ont bénéficié de la reforestation. Les pêcheuses ont pu obtenir un revenu pour leur travail, en plus de prêts et de formations pour ajouter de la valeur à leurs produits.
D’ici les prochaines années, le FIDA espère encore reboiser plus de 1 000 hectares de mangroves au Sénégal. Selon le rapport du GIEC publié le 9 août, le niveau des mers pourrait augmenter de deux mètres d’ici la fin du siècle.
