Né en 1936 à Kendal, en Jamaïque, Rainford Hugh « Lee » Perry avait quitté l’école à 15 ans avant de s’installer à Kingston dans les années 1960.
« Mon père travaillait à la rue, ma mère dans les champs. Nous étions très pauvres », a-t-il dit en 1984 au magazine de rock britannique NME. « Je n’ai rien appris à l’école. J’ai tout appris dans la rue ».
