Le secteur minier nigérian a enregistré une performance pour l’année 2020 avec une production dans le secteur des mines et des carrières qui s’est accrue de 17,95%, passant de 54,5 millions de tonnes en 2019 à 64,3 millions de tonnes en 2020.
Selon le Bureau national des statistiques (NBS) dans son nouveau rapport sur les statistiques de la production minérale 2019-2020 publié lundi 13 décembre, les Etats de Kogi (12,5 millions de tonnes), d’Ogun (12,1 millions de tonnes) et de Cross River (8,9 millions de tonnes) ont enregistré les plus grandes parts de la production en 2020. Aussi, les minéraux les plus extraits restent-ils le calcaire, le sable et le granit.
« Le secteur des mines et des carrières est crucial pour la croissance au Nigéria, compte tenu du potentiel d’exportation des ressources minérales vers le reste du monde et de la volonté de diversification. Essentiellement, on dit que le Nigeria est doté de plus de quarante (40) types de minéraux, y compris le marbre, le charbon, le minerai de fer, l’or, la silice, le plomb, le zinc, le minerai d’étain, le manganèse, le granit, la latérite, le calcaire, etc », note le rapport.
Le NBS précise toutefois que les chiffres proviennent uniquement des canaux formels, car les activités minières artisanales et à petite échelle qui constituent plus de 80% des activités minières actuelles dans le pays ne sont pas comptabilisées.
« En outre, les activités minières illégales se sont poursuivies sans relâche. Le gouvernement a lancé l’Initiative présidentielle de développement de l’extraction artisanale de l’or (PAGMI) en 2019 pour intégrer les activités artisanales et d’extraction aurifère à petite échelle dans le pays et stimuler l’augmentation des réserves de change », indique le NBS.
