Elle a été transportée d’urgence au Massachusetts General Hospital où un spécialiste des maladies infectieuses avait confirmé que Rodriguez souffrait de paludisme cérébral. À ce moment-là, elle était tombée dans le coma. Selon les médecins, Rodriguez n’avait que 2% de chances de survie après que l’Artésunate – un médicament utilisé pour traiter le paludisme grave – l’ait envoyée dans un choc septique et une défaillance organique.

Les médicaments ont fait noircir ses pieds et ses mains à cause de la nécrose et à un moment donné, elle a vu son propre orteil tomber dans sa main. “C’était horrible, absolument horrible. Complètement inimaginable », a-t-elle déclaré.
