L’Union européenne a annoncé, mercredi 15 décembre, suspendre sa mission de formation de l’armée nationale en raison « du contrôle exercé par les mercenaires de la société Wagner sur les Forces armées centrafricaines » (FACA). La décision été prise il y a deux semaines, en prélude aux sanctions ciblant l’organisation et plusieurs de ses membres, dont le conseiller du président centrafricain, Valery Sakharov, pour des exactions commises à travers le monde.
La mission de formation de l’UE avait été lancée en 2016 après le départ de l’opération militaire française Sangaris.
« Les mercenaires de la société Wagner commettent régulièrement des exactions contre la population civile. Il fallait donc s’assurer qu’ils n’emploient pas les soldats centrafricains que nous avons formés », indique le général Langlade de Montgros, commandant de la mission de formation de l’Union européenne (EUTM) en Centrafrique.
Un récent rapport européen dénonce en effet la prise de contrôle par le groupe Wagner d’un bataillon de l’armée centrafricaine, préalablement entraîné par l’EUTM.
