Le Japon a procédé mardi à l’exécution de trois condamnés à mort, selon des médias locaux citant des sources y compris au ministère de la Justice.
Ces exécutions seraient les premières dans le pays depuis décembre 2019 et depuis l’arrivée au pouvoir du Premier ministre Fumio Kishida début octobre.
Le ministère de la Justice, joint par l’AFP, n’a pas immédiatement confirmé ces informations. Les médias locaux n’ont pas dévoilé l’identité des prisonniers exécutés.
La dernière exécution remontait à décembre 2019, celle d’un Chinois reconnu coupable des meurtres de quatre membres d’une même famille dans le sud-ouest du pays en 2003.
La population continue de soutenir la peine de mort
Le Japon a exécuté trois condamnés en 2019 et 15 en 2018, dont 13 membres de la secte Aum, impliquée dans un attentat au gaz sarin dans le métro de Tokyo en 1995. Le pays compte actuellement plus de 100 condamnés à mort, et de nombreuses années s’écoulent généralement entre l’énoncé de la sentence et son exécution par pendaison.
Le soutien de la population à la peine capitale reste fort malgré les critiques venues de l’étranger, en particulier des organisations de défense des droits humains.
