Les autorités américaines ont demandé aux opérateurs téléphoniques AT&T et Verizon un nouveau délai de deux semaines maximum pour déployer leurs nouvelles bandes de fréquence 5G, après des préoccupations sur de possibles interférences avec les appareils de bord des avions.
La mise en service, initialement prévue le 5 décembre, avait déjà été repoussée et devait se dérouler le 5 janvier. Mais les avionneurs européen Airbus et américain Boeing ont récemment exprimé leur «inquiétude» au sujet de possibles interférences de la 5G avec les radioaltimètres des avions.
Le ministre américain des Transports, Pete Buttigieg, et le patron du régulateur américain de l’aviation (FAA), Steve Dickson, ont donc proposé ce nouveau délai de mise en service, dans un courrier transmis vendredi à AT&T et Verizon, deux des principaux opérateurs téléphoniques du pays. Ils leur demandent ainsi «de continuer à suspendre l’introduction du service commercial C-Band pour une courte période supplémentaire, n’excédant pas deux semaines au-delà de l’actuelle date de déploiement prévue le 5 janvier».
«Comme prévu en janvier»
Ils assurent que le service pourra débuter «comme prévu en janvier, avec certaines exceptions autour des aéroports prioritaires», et disent vouloir «trouver une solution qui donnera l’assurance que la bande C 5G et l’aviation coexisteront en toute sécurité aux États-Unis».
«Nous avons reçu la lettre du gouvernement après 18H00 le soir du réveillon de Nouvel An. Nous sommes en train de l’examiner», a commenté Rich Young, porte-parole de Verizon, dans un courriel à l’AFP. AT&T a également indiqué avoir reçu la lettre et être en train de l’examiner.
Les bandes de fréquence 3,7-3,8 GHz ont été attribuées à AT&T et Verizon en février à l’issue d’un appel d’offres de plusieurs dizaines de milliards de dollars.
Ils avaient toutefois accepté début novembre de repousser le lancement à janvier, face à des inquiétudes de la FAA sur de potentiels problèmes d’interférence avec les appareils mesurant l’altitude dans les avions, et avaient demandé des informations supplémentaires sur ces instruments, qui fonctionnent sur des bandes fréquence pouvant être utilisées pour la 5G. La FAA a aussi émis de nouvelles directives limitant l’utilisation de ces appareils de bord dans certaines situations. Les compagnies aériennes américaines ont fait part de leur préoccupation face aux potentiels coûts induits, et appelé les autorités à trouver rapidement une solution.
Dans une lettre commune envoyée fin novembre à la Commission fédérale des communications (FCC), qui supervise le déploiement de la 5G dans le pays, AT&T et Verizon avaient expliqué vouloir procéder à ce déploiement en janvier mais prendre jusqu’en juillet 2022 des mesures de précaution en plus de celles déjà prévues par la loi, le temps que la FAA procède à ses analyses.
