Une simple prise de vue de Google Maps qui met fin à 20 ans de cavale. L’une des têtes du groupe mafieux sicilien « Stidda » a été arrêté près de Madrid en Espagne, d’après des informations de Reuters mercredi. L’enquête a été relancée il y a deux ans alors que les autorités italiennes ont identifié son visage sur un cliché pris par Google Maps.
Gioacchino Gammino, âgé de 61 ans, se cachait en Espagne, à Galapagar, à une quarantaine de kilomètres de la capitale, où il tenait un magasin de fruits et légumes. Les enquêteurs siciliens avaient déjà des doutes sur sa présence dans la ville, la photo de Google Maps a permis de confirmer leurs soupçons.
« La photo nous a permis de confirmer l’investigation que nous développions de manière traditionnelle », explique Nicola Atiero, directeur adjoint de l’unité de police anti-mafia italienne.
Le mafieux s’était échappé de la prison de Rebibbia, à Rome, en 2002. Il était condamné à la réclusion à perpétuité pour un meurtre commis plusieurs années auparavant. Il serait actuellement toujours en détention en Espagne. Les enquêteurs espèrent pouvoir le rapatrier en Italie avant la fin du mois de février.
