Il était hospitalisé depuis quinze jours dans son pays pour une « complication grave » de son état, et ses activités officielles avaient été annulées.
Le président du Parlement européen, le social-démocrate Italien David Sassoli, est décédé dans la nuit de lundi 10 à mardi 11 janvier au CRO (centre de référence d’oncologie) d’Aviano, en Italie, où il était hospitalisé depuis fin décembre, a annoncé son porte-parole Roberto Cuillo sur Twitter. Il était âgé de 65 ans.

Le responsable social-démocrate, dont le mandat s’achevait ce mois-ci, avait été admis à l’hôpital le 26 décembre « en raison d’une complication grave due à un dysfonctionnement du système immunitaire », a fait savoir, lundi, son porte-parole dans un communiqué. « En conséquence, toutes les activités officielles du président du Parlement européen (avaient) été annulées. »
En raison de sa maladie, David Sassoli n’avait pas été en mesure d’assurer ses fonctions ces dernières semaines.
Sa santé était son talon d’Achille. Ayant souffert par le passé d’une leucémie, il avait déjà été hospitalisé cet automne pour une pneumonie qui l’avait tenu éloigné du Parlement pendant plusieurs semaines.
Deux passions : la politique et le journalisme
Né le 30 mai 1956 à Florence, en Toscane, David Sassoli a choisi le journalisme après des études de sciences politique. Il a commencé à collaborer avec de petits journaux et des agences de presse puis, en 1992, a intégré la RAI, la chaîne publique de radio-télévision, dont il est devenu un des présentateurs vedette de la première chaine.
Le coup de foudre pour la politique s’est produit en 2009 quand l’ancien maire de Rome de gauche, Walter Veltroni, organise la fusion de deux grands partis de gauche et de centre gauche, un projet auquel David Sassoli se rallie, et qui donne naissance au Parti Démocrate (PD).
Candidat aux élections européennes, il est élu sur une liste du PD avec plus de 400 000 voix, un succès qui l’éloigne définitivement des écrans et qui lance sa carrière politique au sein du Parlement.
Chef de la délégation du PD au sein de cette institution, il tente une incursion sur la scène politique nationale en se présentant aux primaires de ce parti pour le poste de maire de Rome en 2013, mais est devancé par Ignazio Marino qui sera élu plus tard à la mairie. Depuis cette tentative avortée, ce père de deux enfants se consacrait à l’assemblée européenne. Réélu en 2014, il était devenu vice-président du Parlement en charge du budget et de la politique euro-méditerranéenne.
Il revendiquait la paternité de « la plus importante réforme ferroviaire de l’Union européenne – la loi européenne Sassoli-Dijksma – qui a été adoptée en 2017 après trois années de négociations compliquées » sur l’ouverture à la concurrence des marchés nationaux de transport de passagers.
Un mandat plombé par le Covid-19
Peu enclin aux éclats mais tenant d’une main ferme les débats dans l’hémicycle, cet ancien présentateur de journal télévisé en Italie avait pris la présidence du Parlement européen à l’issue de tractations entre grandes forces politiques et gouvernements pour les présidences des trois institutions européennes en 2019.
La Commission était allée au PPE (droite pro-européenne) avec Ursula von der Leyen, le Conseil aux Libéraux avec Charles Michel et le Parlement aux Socialistes avec David Sassoli. Sa nationalité, son parti et sa connaissance de l’institution, dont il a été un des vice-présidents pendant la précédente législature, avaient fait de lui, à la dernière minute, l’homme de la situation.
Il a vu son mandat de deux ans et demi plombé par la crise sanitaire. Mais l’attention portée à ses équipes, mises en télétravail, son sens de l’organisation, avec un système de vote à distance, et sa capacité à résister aux pressions françaises pour faire revenir les élus à Strasbourg, siège du Parlement, lui ont valu le respect de l’institution.
Signe de solidarité en pleine pandémie, il avait mis à disposition les locaux désertés du Parlement, tant à Strasbourg qu’à Bruxelles, pour la préparation de repas destinés aux familles dans le besoin et installer un centre de dépistage du Covid-19.
Son mandat expirait ce mois-ci, à la moitié de la législature quinquennale.
