Denrées alimentaires, eau potable, générateurs et abris temporaires : les premiers avions transportant une aide d’urgence et des appareils de communication ont atterri jeudi aux îles Tonga, coupées du monde cinq jours après une éruption et un tsunami dévastateurs.
La petite nation du Pacifique est isolée depuis l’éruption le 15 janvier du volcan Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, une des plus puissantes dans le monde depuis des décennies, qui a provoqué de lourds dégâts ainsi que la rupture du câble de communications reliant le pays aux réseaux internet et téléphonique mondiaux.
Selon les autorités, des avions militaires australiens et néo-zélandais ont atterri jeudi à l’aéroport principal de l’archipel, sur l’île de Tongatapu. La veille, après des jours de travail, la piste avait été enfin débarrassée de la couche de cendres volcaniques de cinq à dix centimètres qui la rendait inutilisable.
L’Australie a envoyé jeudi un premier avion C17 Globemaster chargé d’aide, et comptait faire décoller un deuxième appareil dans la journée.
L’avion néo-zélandais, quant à lui, «transporte de l’aide humanitaire et du matériel de secours en cas de catastrophe, notamment des conteneurs d’eau, des kits d’hygiène, des abris temporaires, des générateurs et des équipements de communication», a précisé la ministre néo-zélandaise des Affaires étrangères, Nanaia Mahuta.
Les premières images en provenance de Nuku’alofa, la capitale des Tonga, montrent des bâtiments recouverts de cendres, des murs effondrés et des rues jonchées de rochers, de troncs d’arbres et autres débris. Environ 84 000 personnes, soit plus de 80 % de la population des Tonga, ont été affectées par l’éruption du volcan et le tsunami qui a suivi, a indiqué l’ONU.
L’archipel fait notamment face à un besoin urgent d’eau potable. «Les réserves en eau à travers les Tonga ont été sévèrement affectées par la chute de cendres et l’eau salée du tsunami», a déclaré Katie Greenwood, de la Fédération internationale de la Croix Rouge et du Croissant Rouge. Selon elle, il existe «un risque croissant de maladies comme le choléra et la diarrhée». Les réserves alimentaires des Tonga pourraient ne pas être suffisantes. «Toute l’agriculture est ruinée», a affirmé le président de l’Assemblée nationale du pays, Fatafehi Fakafanua.
Depuis que des avions peuvent à nouveau atterrir, de nombreuses nations ont proposé leur aide. Le Japon a annoncé l’envoi de deux avions C-130. D’autres pays, dont la Chine et la France ont également annoncé leur assistance.
Les strictes mesures destinées à empêcher l’entrée dans le pays du Covid-19, qui l’a jusqu’ici épargné, resteront en vigueur. L’aide sera livrée sans aucun contact physique, et les équipages et les passagers passeront peu de temps au sol.
L’aide arrivera également par la mer.
