D’une taille comparable à celle de la Grande-Bretagne, le glacier Thwaites se détériore de plus en plus vite sous l’effet du réchauffement climatique. Sa disparition totale entraînerait à elle seule une augmentation de 65 centimètres du niveau des mers.
C’est un colosse de glace aux pieds d’argile : 120 km de large, 600 km de long et 3 km de profondeur, le glacier Thwaites en Antarctique, surnommé « le glacier de l’Apocalypse », se fissure de plus en plus vite, ouvrant la voie à un scénario catastrophe pour la planète.
Une récente étude combinant données satellites, radars souterrains et mesures GPS a montré l’existence de cassures inquiétantes sur la plateforme de glace qui maintient le glacier.
« Dans ce cas, c’est la partie flottante du glacier qui est attaquée par la chaleur océanique. Or, c’est cette partie flottante qui freine le glacier situé au-dessus. Elle sert en quelque sorte de ‘bouchon' », explique à France 24 Catherine Ritz, directrice de recherche à l’Institut des géosciences de l’environnement de Grenoble. « On sait depuis longtemps que ce glacier pose un réel problème de fragilité à cause de sa géométrie et de la façon dont est configuré le socle rocheux sous la calotte glaciaire », ajoute la climatologue.
À cela s’ajoute un autre phénomène révélé par les mesures d’un robot plongeur : la glace se creuse sous le glacier, fragilisant encore un peu plus l’édifice.
Thwaites déverse déjà en moyenne 50 milliards de tonnes de glace dans l’océan tous les ans. Un rythme d’écoulement de l’eau qui n’a cessé de s’accélérer lors des dernières décennies sous l’effet du réchauffement climatique et de la modification de la circulation des courants océaniques.
Le « talon d’Achille » de l’Antarctique
Selon les glaciologues qui surveillent l’évolution de Thwaites, la zone flottante du glacier est susceptible de fondre d’ici cinq ans, un point de non-retour qui pourrait entraîner sa disparition totale.
Interrogée par la BBC, la Dre Erin Pettit, principale coordinatrice du projet d’étude du glacier, livre une métaphore saisissante pour comprendre le phénomène : « Je le visualise un peu comme cette vitre de voiture où vous avez quelques fissures qui se propagent lentement, puis soudain vous passez sur une bosse dans votre voiture et tout commence à se briser dans toutes les directions. »
Si tout le glacier venait à disparaître, le niveau de la mer monterait de 65 centimètres, alertent les scientifiques. À plus long terme, c’est même une élévation de 3 mètres qui se profile dans les siècles à venir.
Situé dans l’ouest de l’Antarctique, le gigantesque bloc de glace, aussi grand que la Grande-Bretagne ou l’État de Floride, occupe en effet une position stratégique, à l’entrée d’une série de vallées qui se trouvent en dessous du niveau de la mer.
