L’actrice américaine Whoopi Goldberg a été suspendue mardi pour deux semaines de l’émission qu’elle co-présente sur la chaîne américaine ABC, après avoir affirmé la veille que l’Holocauste n’était « pas une question de race ».
Elle a présenté des excuses lundi pour cette déclaration faite alors qu’elle cherchait à défendre le roman graphique sur la Shoah Maus, récemment banni du programme scolaire par les autorités d’un comté du sud des États-Unis. Mais Kim Godwin, présidente d’ABC, a estimé que ce n’était pas suffisant et a décidé de suspendre l’animatrice de la célèbre émission de talk-show The View.
« Avec effet immédiat, je suspends Whoopi Goldberg pour deux semaines après ses commentaires mal avisés et préjudiciables », a-t-elle indiqué dans un communiqué publié sur un compte Twitter de la chaîne.

Lors de l’émission quotidienne, la comédienne a déploré que des classiques comme Maus, dans lequel le dessinateur Art Spiegelman raconte les souvenirs bouleversants de son père rescapé de la Shoah, ou Ne tirez pas sur l’oiseau moqueur d’Harper Lee, soient bannis d’écoles américaines.
Puis elle a ajouté que l’Holocauste n’était « pas une question de race, c’est une question d’inhumanité des hommes envers les hommes », des propos qui ont immédiatement surpris ses interlocutrices en plateau.
« J’aurais dû dire que c’était lié aux deux », s’est excusée ensuite sur Twitter l’actrice oscarisée en 1991 pour son rôle dans ‘Ghost’, considérée comme une pionnière de la percée des acteurs noirs sur la scène américaine.
« Comme l’a dit Jonathan Greenblatt de l’Anti-Defamation League (une organisation de lutte contre l’antisémitisme, NDLR), l’Holocauste a été la destruction systématique par les nazis du peuple juif, qu’ils considéraient comme une race inférieure », a-t-elle ajouté.
« Je suis désolée que mes mots aient causé cette souffrance », a conclu, en présentant ses « sincères excuses », celle qui a récemment pris position contre les restrictions à l’avortement, les discriminations envers les homosexuels ou pour la distribution de vaccins anti-Covid aux pays pauvres.
