Sur le front du Covid-19, la vague Omicron s’est déplacée de l’ouest de l’Europe vers l’est. Alors que des pays comme la France, l’Espagne ou l’Italie semblent avoir passé le pic des contaminations, l’est de l’Europe fait face à une augmentation très forte du nombre de cas.
Avec un décalage de quelques semaines par rapport à l’Europe de l’Ouest, la vague liée au variant Omicron frappe de plein fouet l’est du Vieux Continent. « Tous les pays sont en croissance exponentielle. Certains très rapide, c’est le cas dela Russie, de l’Ukraine, mais aussi de la Slovaquie ou de la Roumanie, de la Pologne, c’est le cas des Pays baltes également, c’est aussi le cas de la Hongrie », énumère le Pr Antoine Flahault, épidémiologiste, qui dirige l’Institut de santé globale à l’université de Genève.
« Très élevée et très violente »
« Et ce que l’on voit, c’est que la Bulgarie et la Croatie en revanche pourraient peut-être arriver à leur pic épidémique. Donc on voit que la vague semble ne pas être beaucoup plus longue que celle qui a concerné les pays de l’ouest de l’Europe, mais très élevée et très violente », rapporte encore Antoine Flahaut.
Moins de la moitié de la population vaccinée
Or, dans certains de ces pays, la couverture vaccinale est très en deçà de celle des pays d’Europe de l’Ouest où plus des trois quarts de la population a fait une injection. Ainsi, en Bulgarie, moins d’un tiers des habitants ont reçu une dose. En Pologne et en Russie, environ la moitié. Une situation qui ne permet pas de briser la vague des admissions dans les hôpitaux.
